2 corinthians 8:9

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” ESV

This verse has been very encouraging to me the past few months mostly because it is the gospel displayed in one verse once you break it down. From the context in this chapter we can gather that the Lord gives generously. Very, very generously.

Jesus became poor while he was still rich. Jesus had the power to be the wealthiest man on earth, but what did he choose instead? He chose to be a part of our poverty. He never lost his riches in this. Inwardly he was still rich, He was perfect, He knew no sin, He knows the riches that heaven has to offer. Outwardly he was poor for Matthew 8:20 says,

“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” ESV

Wow. Jesus humbled himself to be in our poverty with us. What a savior. This is how the Lord gives so generously. He chose to send his Son to be in our poverty with us for our sake. What does this teach us about God? He has a giving heart, He made Jesus accessible to us all, He shows us how unimportant material things are, He humbles us, and he fulfilled his plan through his son giving us the chance for salvation.

Through all of this we have the opportunity to become rich in an eternal, heavenly, life with Jesus because he first came and was a part of our poverty. And humbled himself in obedience to die for our sin and our shame.  (Philippians 2:8) “And being found in human form, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” ESV
